Sea moss went from a Caribbean kitchen staple to a wellness-aisle celebrity in about five years, and a lot of what's written about it online is either vague or wildly overstated. Here's the straight version, from someone who sells the stuff and eats it daily.
What is sea moss gel?
Sea moss gel is made from Irish sea moss (Genus Chondrus / Gracilaria), a sea vegetable that grows on rocks in shallow coastal water. The dried moss is rinsed, soaked in water until it swells, then blended into a smooth, neutral-tasting gel. Ours is wildcrafted in Saint Lucia — harvested from open volcanic-rock waters rather than grown on farmed ropes in a pool, which is why it carries more iodine, iron and sulfur.
How much sea moss gel should I take per day?
One to two tablespoons a day is the common serving. Start with one tablespoon for the first week so your body can adjust — sea moss is naturally rich in iodine, and more is not better. If you're pregnant, nursing, or managing a thyroid condition, check with your doctor before adding it.
How do you take sea moss gel?
Straight off the spoon is the fastest way. Otherwise blend a tablespoon into a smoothie, stir it into oatmeal, coffee, tea or soup, or mix it into one of our cold-pressed juices. It has almost no flavor of its own, so it disappears into whatever you put it in. It also thickens things slightly, which makes it a useful natural thickener in smoothies.
How long does sea moss gel last, and how should I store it?
Keep it in a sealed glass jar in the fridge and use it within three to four weeks. It should stay smooth and smell faintly of the ocean. If it smells sour, turns slimy on top, or grows any film, throw it out. You can also freeze portions in an ice-cube tray for a few months and drop a cube straight into a smoothie.
Wildcrafted vs farmed sea moss — does it matter?
Wildcrafted moss grows on rock in moving ocean water and takes on the mineral profile of that water. Pool-grown or rope-farmed moss is often fed salt water and can come out pale, uniform and lighter in minerals. Wildcrafted Saint Lucian moss is typically golden and varied in shape — that irregularity is a good sign, not a defect.
A note on what it can and can't do
Sea moss is a mineral-dense whole food — that's the honest pitch. It's a good source of iodine and trace minerals, and plenty of people (me included) find it a simple daily habit that's easier to keep than a cabinet full of pills. It is not a treatment for any condition, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling harder than they should.
